The iPhone 17e is the cheaper way into Apple’s current lineup, and it makes different trade-offs from the standard iPhone 17. This page lays out what Apple documents for the cable, charger and screen, so you can see exactly where the savings come from. Every figure is traced to a source listed at the bottom of the page.

The wired charging row is blank on purpose: Apple publishes a fast-charge claim tied to a 20W adapter, not a maximum wattage. The refresh rate row is blank because Apple lists no refresh rate or ProMotion for this model on the pages we checked.
Where does the iPhone 17e fit?
Apple introduced the iPhone 17e on March 2, 2026 as a more affordable addition to the iPhone 17 lineup. Pre-orders began Wednesday, March 4, with availability from Wednesday, March 11. It starts at 256GB of storage for $599, which Apple describes as double the entry storage of the previous generation at the same starting price. The finishes are black, white and a new soft pink with a matte finish.
Reporting on Counterpoint Research’s Q2 2026 data puts the iPhone 17e seventh among the world’s best-selling smartphones, which is why it sits seventh in our library. The Apple hub lists the rest of the lineup, including the iPhone 17 Pro.
What cable does the iPhone 17e use?
The phone has a single USB-C connector. Apple’s specifications list charging and USB 2 data transfer at up to 480Mb/s for the port, and the box includes a 1 m USB-C charge cable. Unlike the Pro models, which Apple lists at USB 3 up to 10Gb/s, the 17e matches the standard iPhone 17’s USB 2 speed.
What does USB 2 mean for you? It is plenty for charging and for moving photos in modest batches, but a faster cable will not speed it up, because the USB-IF says USB products run at the lowest common speed. Our USB speed guide explains the tiers. Our USB-C explainer covers the connector, and cable buying safety covers how to buy a trustworthy cable.
What charger does the iPhone 17e need?
Wired. Apple lists the iPhone 17e as fast-charge capable: up to 50% charge in 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher (available separately) paired with a USB-C charging cable. That is a lower adapter requirement than the 40W Apple lists for the iPhone 17 and the Pro models, so a modest adapter will do. The box has no adapter. See the wattage guide and USB Power Delivery.
MagSafe. Apple lists MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W. Apple’s MagSafe page groups the iPhone 17e with iPhone 15 and earlier: up to 15W with a 20W or greater USB-C power adapter, 9V/2.22A or 9V/2.56A or higher, and a MagSafe Charger with part number A2140. Apple also says that charging is limited while USB-C or Lightning accessories such as headphones are connected.
Qi2. Apple also lists Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W, which its newsroom says compares with 7.5W Qi charging on the iPhone 16e. See Qi2 explained and Qi explained, and our wireless charger guide. For a short checklist, read which charger is safe for my phone.
The screen, explained
The iPhone 17e has a 6.1-inch all-screen OLED display, branded Super Retina XDR, at 2532-by-1170 pixels and 460 ppi. Apple lists a typical 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 800 nits typical maximum brightness and 1200 nits peak brightness for HDR, with True Tone, wide color (P3) and an anti-reflective coating. Measured as a rectangle, the screen is 6.06 inches diagonally, because of the rounded corners.
This is where the 17e differs from the iPhone 17, whose 6.3-inch display Apple lists with ProMotion, an Always-On display and 3000 nits peak outdoor brightness. For the 17e Apple lists no ProMotion or adaptive refresh rate on the pages we checked, so we leave the refresh rate blank rather than guess. Our OLED explainer describes what OLED means and the refresh rate guide explains why the missing number matters.
The cover glass is Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says has 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
Performance, cameras and connectivity
The phone has the A19 chip, built on 3-nanometer technology, which Apple’s announcement describes as delivering strong performance. It also has Apple’s C1X cellular modem, which Apple says is up to 2x faster than C1 in the iPhone 16e and uses 30 percent less energy than the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple lists 5G on sub-6 GHz bands with 4x4 MIMO, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3; mmWave 5G and Wi-Fi 7 are not listed, unlike on the iPhone 17.
The rear camera is a single 48MP Fusion system with a 26 mm main lens at f/1.6 and optical image stabilization, which also provides a 12MP 2x telephoto at 52 mm. The front camera is a 12MP TrueDepth camera. Apple lists up to 26 hours of video playback and up to 21 hours of streamed video.
How it compares with the iPhone 17
The quickest way to judge the 17e is against the iPhone 17, using Apple’s own figures. The 17e has a 6.1-inch display, the 17 has 6.3 inches. The 17e lists 800 nits typical maximum brightness and 1200 nits peak for HDR, while the 17 lists 1000 nits typical and 3000 nits peak outdoors. The 17e uses the A19 chip and lists Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, while the 17 pairs the A19 with Apple’s N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. For video playback Apple lists up to 26 hours for the 17e and up to 30 hours for the 17.
What the two share is just as telling. Both have a USB-C port listed at USB 2 and up to 480Mb/s, both include only a USB-C cable in the box, both offer 256GB and 512GB, both use a Ceramic Shield 2 front and both are rated IP68. The largest practical gap for accessory buyers is wireless charging: the 17e tops out at 15W on MagSafe and Qi2, while the 17 reaches 25W when paired with a 30W adapter. If you charge mostly at a desk or in a car, that gap may not matter; if you use a wireless pad overnight, it probably will not either, since speed matters least when the phone sits for hours.
Build and durability
The phone has an aluminum design with a Ceramic Shield 2 front and is rated IP68, with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529. It measures 5.78 inches tall, 2.82 inches wide and 0.31 inches deep and weighs 169 grams. It supports dual eSIM and is not compatible with physical SIM cards.
