The Galaxy A16 5G is the older sibling of the Galaxy A17 5G, and it still turns up in sales rankings and on retailers’ shelves. This page explains what you need to know to buy accessories for it or decide whether to buy one used or refurbished, using Samsung’s own documents. Every figure is traced to a source listed at the bottom of the page.

Two blanks are deliberate. The USB spec row is empty because we found no USB version for the US model on Samsung’s pages. Wireless charging is empty because Samsung says the phone does not support it.
Where does the Galaxy A16 5G fit?
Samsung’s announcement is dated January 2, 2025. It said the Galaxy A16 5G would be available nationwide from January 9, 2025 at national retailers, carriers and Samsung.com, starting at $199.99 in Blue Black and Light Gray. Samsung said it carries forward the Galaxy design language with slimmer bezels, a thinner body and redesigned side frames compared with its predecessor.
It is still a popular phone. Counterpoint Research’s full-year 2025 ranking, as reported by AppleInsider, puts the Galaxy A16 5G fifth in the world, and a report on US sales gives it fifth place with a 7% share in Q2 2026. It no longer appears on Samsung’s current US smartphone page, which lists the A57 5G, A37 5G, A27 5G and A17 5G instead, so we mark it as discontinued and treat it as a phone many people already own. See the Samsung hub for the current lineup.
What cable does the Galaxy A16 5G use?
Samsung’s US box list names a USB Data Cable rated 25W with USB C to C ends. The phone therefore charges and syncs over USB-C. Our USB-C explainer covers the connector: slim, reversible and defined by the USB-IF.
The cable is rated for 25W, which matches the phone’s charging limit; it is not meant to carry more. We do not state a data speed because Samsung’s US pages did not give a USB version for this model; for the general tiers see the USB speed guide. If you need a replacement, read cable buying safety and keep to the 25W class.
What charger does the Galaxy A16 5G need?
Wired. Samsung says the 5000mAh battery supports 25W Super Fast Charging. The announcement notes the 25W Super Fast Charger is sold separately, that speed depends on battery level and other factors, and that you should use only Samsung-approved chargers and cables. Samsung’s accessory page lists a 15W Power Adapter and a 25W PD Power Adapter, both with and without cable, a 25W Portable Battery and a USB Type-C cable.
Samsung’s page for its 25W adapter describes Super Fast Charging as a method based on USB Power Delivery 3.0 and lists PPS support at up to 25W. Our PPS and Samsung Super Fast Charging page explains the terms, and the USB Power Delivery page covers the standard. See the wattage guide and which charger is safe for my phone.
Wireless. There is none. Samsung’s support page says the Galaxy A16 5G does not support wireless charging, so Qi, Qi2 and MagSafe chargers will not work with it.
The screen, explained
The phone has a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 90Hz and 800 nits peak brightness, according to Samsung’s announcement. Samsung’s Canadian page for the phone adds that the 6.7-inch figure is measured on the full rectangle and the screen is 6.5 inches accounting for the rounded corners.
Samsung says AMOLED is a type of OLED screen technology, where each pixel makes its own light; read OLED explained and compare it with LCD. The “up to 90Hz” wording means the rate can vary; our refresh rate guide explains the numbers. Samsung does not describe an LTPO panel for this model.
Performance, battery and storage
The phone is powered by the Exynos 1330 processor, which Samsung says gives smooth performance for high-quality video, games and multitasking. The battery is 5000mAh. Samsung’s accessory page says the phone comes with 128GB of internal storage and supports microSD cards, which are sold separately. Samsung says the phone uses Samsung Knox Vault to protect personal information.
Cameras
Samsung’s announcement describes a 50MP main camera, a 5MP ultra-wide, a 2MP macro lens and a 13MP front camera, with Edit Suggestions to tweak shots on the device. It does not mention optical image stabilization for this model; Samsung’s announcement for the newer Galaxy A17 5G does, listing OIS on its 50MP main camera. If steady video and low-light shots matter to you, that is one concrete difference to weigh.
What is in the box
Samsung’s US page lists three things: the phone, a USB data cable rated 25W with USB C to C ends, and a SIM tray ejector pin. No power adapter is included, and Samsung’s page tells buyers that chargers are sold separately. That matters for budgeting, because a $199.99 phone plus an adapter and a case costs more than the sticker price. Our charger buying guide walks through what to match.
How it compares with the Galaxy A17 5G
The Galaxy A17 5G is the model that replaced it on Samsung’s US page, and the two share more than they differ. Both start at $199.99 in the US, both have a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with a refresh rate up to 90Hz, both use the Exynos 1330 processor and a 5000mAh battery with 25W Super Fast Charging, both are rated IP54, and both promise 6 OS upgrades and 6 years of security updates. Neither has wireless charging and neither includes a power adapter.
The differences in Samsung’s own documents are narrower. The A17 5G lists optical image stabilization on its main camera and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on the front, and Samsung’s table gives it a weight of 192 grams and a thickness of 7.5 mm, while the Canadian A16 page lists 7.9 mm. If you already own an A16 5G, nothing here suggests you need to upgrade for charging or screen reasons; if you are buying, the A17 is the one Samsung currently lists.
Build, durability and software
The Galaxy A16 5G is rated IP54 for dust resistance and protection from splashed water. Samsung’s footnote says the water resistance is based on lab conditions with splashes of fresh water and is not advised for beach or pool use. Samsung’s Canadian page lists a thickness of 7.9mm.
Samsung says the phone will receive 6 generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and 6 years of security updates. That promise is the same length Samsung makes for the newer A17 5G.
Repair overview
iFixit has a device page for the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G and a display replacement guide. When we checked, iFixit listed no repairability score, so we show none. We link to iFixit and never copy its guides.
Read our repair overview for the Galaxy A16 5G, battery replacement basics, screen replacement basics and how to read repairability scores. Our battery page cites Apple’s guidance because we have not yet found a Samsung equivalent; the FAA notes that lithium-ion batteries can overheat, so battery work is best left to trained technicians.
