The iPhone 16 Pro Max was the second best-selling phone in the world in 2025, according to Counterpoint Research, so there are a lot of them in use and a lot of people shopping for cables, chargers and cases for it. This page gathers Apple’s documented specifications and iFixit’s repair information in one place. Every figure is traced to a source listed at the bottom of the page.

The wired charging row is blank on purpose: Apple publishes a fast-charge claim tied to an adapter, not a maximum wattage.

Where does the iPhone 16 Pro Max fit?

Apple introduced the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max on September 9, 2024. Pre-orders began Friday, September 13 and availability began Friday, September 20, with the Pro Max starting at $1,199 in the US. Apple lists four titanium finishes: black, natural, white and desert. The Pro Max has the largest display Apple had made at that point, at 6.9 inches.

Counterpoint Research’s full-year 2025 ranking, reported by AppleInsider, puts it second in the world, behind only the standard iPhone 16 and ahead of the iPhone 16 Pro. That is why it sits tenth in our library. It is no longer listed on Apple’s main iPhone lineup page, which now shows the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16, so we mark it as discontinued; carriers and retailers may still stock it. See the Apple hub for current models, including the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

What cable does the iPhone 16 Pro Max use?

The phone has one USB-C connector. Apple’s specifications list charging, DisplayPort and USB 3 data transfer at up to 10Gb/s. That is the middle tier of USB 3.2, which the USB-IF defines at 5, 10 and 20 Gb/s; see our USB speed guide. The standard iPhone 16 is listed at USB 2 and 480Mb/s, so the Pro Max moves data far faster when the cable and the other device support it.

Because the USB-IF says USB products run at the lowest common speed, a cable that cannot do 10Gb/s will limit the link. The box cable is described by Apple as a USB-C charge cable that supports fast charging and works with USB-C power adapters and computer ports; Apple does not call it a 10Gb/s data cable. For fast transfers, buy a cable made for them and read cable buying safety. Our USB-C explainer covers the connector, and the Lightning page is useful if you still own Lightning accessories.

What charger does the iPhone 16 Pro Max need?

Wired. Apple says up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher paired with a USB-C charging cable, or with a 30W adapter or higher and a MagSafe Charger. Apple says the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max do not include a power adapter, and encourages you to use any compatible USB-C power adapter. See the wattage guide and USB Power Delivery.

MagSafe. Apple lists MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W with a 30W adapter or higher. Apple’s MagSafe page names the iPhone 16 Pro Max among the models that reach 25W with a 30W or greater adapter rated 15V/2.0A or higher. Plug the charger in before placing the phone on it so MagSafe can verify it is safe to deliver maximum power.

Qi2 and Qi. Apple lists Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W and Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W. That means a Qi2 or ordinary Qi charger works but charges more slowly than MagSafe; see Qi2 explained, Qi explained and the wireless charger guide.

Accessories connected. Apple says MagSafe charging is limited to 7.5W while USB-C or Lightning accessories are connected. For a checklist, read which charger is safe for my phone.

The screen, explained

The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch all-screen OLED display, branded Super Retina XDR, at 2868-by-1320 pixels and 460 ppi. It has Dynamic Island, an Always-On display and ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple lists 1000 nits typical maximum brightness, 1600 nits peak for HDR and 2000 nits peak outdoors. When measured as a standard rectangle, Apple says the screen is 6.86 inches diagonally.

OLED means each pixel makes its own light; see OLED explained. The adaptive refresh range lets the screen slow down when little is moving; the refresh rate guide covers it. Apple does not use the term LTPO on the pages we checked, so our table says plain OLED; see LTPO OLED.

Performance, cameras and battery

The A18 Pro chip has a new 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores, a new 6-core GPU and a new 16-core Neural Engine, according to Apple.

The camera system has a 48MP Fusion main camera (24 mm, f/1.78, second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization), a 48MP Ultra Wide (13 mm, f/2.2, 120-degree field of view) and a 12MP 5x Telephoto (120 mm, f/2.8, 20-degree field of view, tetraprism design). Apple lists 5x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out and a 10x optical zoom range, with digital zoom up to 25x, plus a Camera Control button and 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 120 fps on the main camera.

For battery life Apple lists up to 33 hours of video playback, up to 29 hours of streamed video and up to 105 hours of audio playback. These are manufacturer figures.

Build and durability

The phone has a titanium design with the latest-generation Ceramic Shield front and a textured matte glass back. It is rated IP68, with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529. It measures 6.42 inches tall, 3.06 inches wide and 0.32 inches deep and weighs 227 grams. It supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, 5G on sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands and dual eSIM.

How it compares with the iPhone 17 Pro Max

Apple’s pages show how little changed on the surface between this phone and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Both have a 6.9-inch OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, both list USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s on the USB-C port, both start at 256GB and both launched at $1,199 in the US. The 17 Pro Max moves to the A19 Pro chip, adds a 2TB option, lists up to 39 hours of video playback against 33 hours, and uses an aluminum unibody with a vapor chamber where the 16 Pro Max uses titanium. Apple lists Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W on the 17 Pro Max against 15W on the 16 Pro Max, and a 48MP 4x telephoto against the 12MP 5x telephoto here.

If you own a 16 Pro Max, your USB-C cable and MagSafe charger work the same way on the newer phone, so the case for upgrading rests on battery, chip and camera rather than accessories.

Repair overview

iFixit’s device page for the iPhone 16 Pro Max shows a repairability score of 7 out of 10. iFixit lists guides including back glass removal and battery installation. We link to them and never copy iFixit’s text. iFixit’s score page for the iPhone 16 line says the design prioritizes screen repairs and gives access to other parts through the back glass, and flags four different screw types and continued reliance on adhesives as complications.

Read our repair overview for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, battery replacement basics, screen replacement basics and how to read repairability scores. Apple says a professional provider using genuine parts is the safest route for most battery repairs.

Who should buy it, and who might skip it

Facts that help you decide:

  • You want a big screen. It is 6.9 inches, against 6.3 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.1 inches on the iPhone 16.
  • You move large files over a cable. Apple lists USB 3 up to 10Gb/s.
  • You want repair information. iFixit scores it 7 out of 10.
  • You want a charger included. None is in the box; budget for a 30W adapter if you use MagSafe.
  • You want Apple to still sell it. It is not on Apple’s main lineup page; look to the iPhone 17 Pro Max or newer.
