PPS and Samsung Super Fast Charging

PPS sounds technical, but the buying rule is short: use a Samsung-approved 25W or 45W adapter plugged into a wall outlet. The sections below explain what PPS does and what Samsung says you need.

What is PPS?

PPS is a feature inside USB Power Delivery. Wikipedia says USB PD revision 3.0 defines it and that it allows granular control over the output voltage, in a range of 3.3V to 21V in 20mV steps, with current specified in 50mA steps. Samsung’s product page describes PPS as fast charging that adjusts voltage and current in real time.

The USB-IF says certified USB Fast Chargers support PPS, that PPS needs new hosts, devices and chargers to take full advantage, and that these chargers stay backwards compatible with USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery devices.

How does Samsung use PPS?

Samsung’s 45W adapter page says Super Fast Charging 2.0 requires a USB PD 3.0 compatible device supporting Direct Charging, and that devices without those features charge slower. The same page lists PPS at 5.0 to 20.0V for that adapter.

What do I need for Samsung Super Fast Charging?

Samsung’s support page gives three conditions.

RequirementWhat Samsung says
AdapterA 25W or 45W Samsung-approved adapter
PhoneSuper Fast Charging is only available on select devices, and not every device supports 45W
OutletPlug the adapter into a wall outlet, because a computer’s port makes charging slower

Your device chooses the fastest speed it supports, so a bigger adapter does not force a faster charge.

What wired speeds do our Galaxy pages list?

The figures below are the wired wattage on each phone page. They describe what Samsung lists for the phone, not which phones use PPS.

Wired figureSamsung phones in our library
25WGalaxy S26, Galaxy Z Flip8, Galaxy A16 5G, A17 5G, A27 5G
45WGalaxy S26 Plus, S26 FE, A37 5G, A57 5G
60WGalaxy S26 Ultra

Samsung’s support page names 25W and 45W adapters, so for the 60W S26 Ultra, open the phone page and check which adapter Samsung names. Our Galaxy S25 Ultra, Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra pages leave the figure blank because we could not verify a maximum wattage from Samsung, and we do not guess.

Will a PPS charger work with other phones?

Yes. The USB-IF says certified fast chargers are backwards compatible with USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery devices, so a phone that lacks PPS simply charges at the level it supports.

Frequently asked questions

Q01

What does PPS stand for?

Programmable Power Supply. The USB-IF lists it as a feature of the USB Power Delivery 3.0 specification. Wikipedia describes it as granular control over the output voltage, from 3.3V to 21V in 20mV steps, with current set in 50mA steps.

Q02

Which Samsung charger do I need for Super Fast Charging?

Samsung says you need a 25W or 45W Samsung-approved adapter, and that Super Fast Charging is only available on select devices. Not every Galaxy supports 45W, so check your phone's own specification before buying the larger adapter.

Q03

Will a PPS charger work with other phones?

Yes. The USB-IF says certified USB Fast Chargers are backwards compatible with devices that support USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery. A phone without PPS support negotiates an ordinary USB PD level and charges at its own top speed.

Q04

Is PPS the same as Samsung Super Fast Charging 2.0?

No, but they work together. Samsung's 45W adapter page says Super Fast Charging 2.0 needs a USB PD 3.0 device that supports Direct Charging, and lists PPS support for that adapter. PPS is the USB standard feature; Super Fast Charging 2.0 is Samsung's name for its use of it.

Q05

Why is my Galaxy charging slowly?

Samsung says devices without the needed features charge slower, and its support page says to plug the adapter into a wall outlet because a computer's USB port makes charging slower. Check that the adapter is Samsung-approved and at least 25W.

Q06

Do all Samsung phones in your library charge at 45W?

No. Our phone pages list 25W for the Galaxy S26, Z Flip8, A16 5G, A17 5G and A27 5G, 45W for the S26 Plus, S26 FE, A37 5G and A57 5G, and 60W for the S26 Ultra, as listed on each page.
