The wired charging row is blank on purpose. Apple gives a fast-charge claim tied to an adapter rather than a maximum wattage, so we do not invent a figure. The details are in the charging section below.
Where does the iPhone 17 Pro Max fit?
Apple announced the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max together. The announcement says pre-orders began Friday, September 12, 2025, with availability beginning Friday, September 19, and a launch-day newsroom post confirms the new iPhone family reached Apple Stores that day. In the US the Pro Max started at $1,199, and for the first time an iPhone offered a 2TB option, alongside 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Apple lists three finishes: silver, cosmic orange and deep blue.
It is also one of the phones people buy. Counterpoint Research’s Global Handset Model Sales Tracker placed it second worldwide in Q1 2026, and the Q2 2026 results reported by 9to5Mac list it second again. A report on the US market gives it second place with a 13% share in Q2 2026, right behind the standard iPhone 17. See the Apple hub for the rest of the lineup, including the iPhone 17 Pro.
Apple’s main iPhone lineup page now lists the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16, and no longer lists this model, so we mark it as discontinued. Carriers and retailers may still stock it, and Apple still lists it on its compare page. If you own one, nothing about the cable or charger information below changes.
What cable does the iPhone 17 Pro Max use?
The phone has one USB-C connector. Apple’s specifications for the port list charging, DisplayPort and USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s. That is a real difference from the standard iPhone 17, whose port Apple lists at USB 2 and up to 480 Mb/s.
Ten gigabits per second is the middle of the three USB 3.2 tiers the USB-IF defines (5, 10 and 20 Gb/s); see our USB speed guide. The USB-IF also says USB products run at the lowest common speed, so a cable and a drive that cannot do 10Gb/s will hold the transfer back. The box includes a USB-C charge cable that Apple says supports fast charging and works with USB-C power adapters and computer ports, but Apple does not describe it as a 10Gb/s data cable. If fast transfers matter, buy a cable made and marked for them, and read cable buying safety. Our USB-C explainer covers the connector itself.
What charger does the iPhone 17 Pro Max need?
Wired. Apple lists it as fast-charge capable: up to 50% charge in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher (available separately) paired with a USB-C charging cable. Apple does not give a maximum wired wattage on the pages we checked, so the field stays empty. Because the box has no adapter, you supply one. Apple’s own accessory announcement lists a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, but any adapter that meets the stated wattage is what the claim depends on. Read the wattage guide and USB Power Delivery for how USB-C adapters work.
MagSafe. Apple lists MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W, and its MagSafe Charger page names the iPhone 17 Pro Max among the models that reach 25W with a 30W or greater adapter rated 15V/2.0A or higher. With a 30W adapter and a MagSafe Charger, Apple’s claim is up to 50% in 30 minutes. Plug the charger into power before placing the phone on it, Apple says, so MagSafe can check it is safe to deliver maximum power.
Qi2. Apple also lists Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W. See Qi2 explained and the wireless charger buying guide. Only products that are Qi Certified may carry the Qi or Qi2 logo, which is a concrete thing to check.
A limit to know. Apple says charging through MagSafe is limited while USB-C or Lightning accessories such as headphones are connected: 10W for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. For a checklist, read which charger is safe for my phone.
The screen, explained
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch all-screen OLED display that Apple calls Super Retina XDR, at 2868-by-1320 pixels and 460 ppi. It has Dynamic Island, an Always-On display and ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple lists 1000 nits typical maximum brightness, 1600 nits peak for HDR and 3000 nits peak outdoors, with a typical contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1.
OLED means each pixel makes its own light; see OLED explained. The adaptive range is what lets the screen slow down when nothing is moving; our refresh rate guide explains why that matters. Apple does not use the term LTPO on the pages we checked, so our table says plain OLED; see LTPO OLED for the related technology.
The front is Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple’s announcement says has 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation and improved anti-reflection. For the first time, Ceramic Shield also protects the back.
Performance, cameras and battery
The A19 Pro chip has a 6-core CPU (2 performance and 4 efficiency cores), a 6-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says that paired with its new vapor chamber, A19 Pro delivers up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation. The vapor chamber is a sealed cooling plate inside the aluminum chassis, according to Apple.
The camera system is a 48MP Pro Fusion setup: a 48MP Fusion Main (24 mm, f/1.78), a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide (13 mm, f/2.2) and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto (100 mm, 4x, f/2.8). Apple lists 8x optical-quality zoom in, 2x optical zoom out and a 16x optical-quality zoom range, plus digital zoom up to 40x. The front camera is 18MP with Center Stage.
For battery life Apple lists up to 39 hours of video playback and up to 35 hours of streamed video. Apple also says eSIM-only models have a larger battery, taking advantage of the space freed by the physical SIM, with two extra hours of video playback. The US model is eSIM-only, as Apple’s announcement lists the U.S. among eSIM-only markets.
Build, size and durability
The phone uses a brushed aluminum unibody design made from 7000-series aluminum alloy, according to Apple’s announcement, with a forged plateau on the back that makes room for a larger battery. It is rated IP68 (up to 6 meters for 30 minutes) under IEC standard 60529. It measures 163.4 mm tall, 78.0 mm wide and 8.75 mm deep and weighs 233 grams. It supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 5G.
